Mae Kampong Village | Chiang Mai
Mae Kampong Village – A Model for Sustainable Ecotourism
Tucked in the embrace of nature for more than a hundred years, Mae Kampong is Chiang Mai’s famous mountain village with an evergreen jungle and existing local traditions.
Just an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai city, Mae Kampong can be reached by a car, motorcycle, the red songthaew (red car), given that the road is quite narrow but only at a few points is it steep and twisting.
Located in upstream forest areas, the village has a pleasant, cool climate year-round. Mae Kampong can be best described as a village of old wooden shophouses lined up on both sides of the road where the majority of shopowners sell various types of local food and provide seating along the stream. Tourists come here for a leisurely stroll and to mingle with the locals.
Mae Kampong’s homestay has been accredited as the first homestay model in Thailand where guests can stay overnight with locals in their home, an experience worth having to learn their lifestyle and engage in their daily activities.
