INWA
The Inwa Ancient City (formerly known as Ava) was founded by King Thadominbya during 1364. What makes it worthy to be part of your Mandalay travel guide is it is not like any typical cities you will see.
This ancient city is built on an artificial island but it was destroyed by an earthquake during 1838.
However, the beautiful remnants of the past are still here. These include the fort walls and moat that were built to stand still for many centuries already. One of the places to visit here is the Maha Aung Mye Bon Zan Monastery or also known as Me Nu Oak-kyaung (Brick Monastery).
It is not only one of the must-see attractions in Inwa but also one of the places to visit in Myanmar as it perfectly reflects its architecture during the 19th century. It was also destroyed by the earthquake but was successfully repaired.
SAGAING
If you are a temple buff and even if you are not, you should include Sagaing in your Mandalay travel guide. It just sits on the southwest of Mandalay, a place abundant with temples and pagodas. A large number of these are spreading through the hills of Sagaing.
One of the distinctive pagodas here is the U Min Thonze Pagoda where 45 images of Buddha in different sizes and expressions are on display.
AMARAPURA
This city lies on the south of Mandalay and on the left bank of Ayarwaddy River. One of the famous spots here is the U Bein Bridge. In addition, this bridge was built using old planks and wood posts of deconstructed homes in Sagaing and Inwa.
So, it would be a perfect place to capture a photo to post on your Instagram feed or you can just simply admire the sunset here!
MINGUN
Are you still wondering where to go in Mandalay aside from the places mentioned above? Fret not, just a ferry away from the city through the Irrawaddy river, Mingun can be found. Also, you will see a massive pagoda that was meant to be the largest of its kind but it was never finished on the edge of the river.
Nevertheless, it is worth visiting and some of the places you should go to here are the Myatheindan Pagoda, Mingun Bell, and the very own version of Myanmar’s Taj Mahal.
