All About Wat Chalong, Phuket
Wat Chalong, also known as Wat Chaiyathararam, is one of the most important and largest temples in Phuket, making it a historical landmark in the city. The temple complex comprises the main building, Phra Mahathat Chedi, and other smaller structures on the temple grounds.
Built at the beginning of the 19th century, the temple features stunning architecture influenced by southern, central, and northeastern Thailand. The main building on the temple ground is a 60-metre-tall sermon hall housing a fragment of Buddha’s bone and two statues of the founder monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang. The Rich History of Wat Chalong, Phuket
Wat Chalong was built in the 19th century by the two founder monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang. In the past, the tin mining industry was one of the main pillars of Phuket’s wealth, and most workers in the mines were Chinese immigrants. In 1876, the Chinese Coolie Rebellion, commonly known as Ang Yi, erupted in Phuket, resulting in injuries and serious loss of life.
During the rebellion, many local Thai people turned to the temple for help and shelter. Luang Pho Chaem, who was the abbot of Wat Chalong at the time, took in innocent people suffering through this difficult time. With knowledge of herbal medicine and healing, the monks at the temple aided the injured victims and provided a place of refuge. Wat Chalong served as a haven for those suffering from the rebellion.
After the rebellion was suppressed, local Thai people felt deeply indebted and thankful tothe monks, especially Luang Pho Chaem. Once the situation was resolved, King Rama V extended an invitation to Luang Pho Chaem and granted the title of Phra Kry Wisit Wongsacharn, making him a revered figure in Phuket ever since.
